The annoying “could not find flash.ocx” error

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

Have you ever experience leaving your computer idle which resulted to loading up your screensaver and when you get back a message will pop up telling you the error “could not find flash.ocx”? I experience this error for quite sometime and finally got a solution for it.

The message is  the result of an error loading your screensaver looking for flash.ocx. As you can see, Adobe changed the filename of the well known flash.ocx into flash9f.ocx or flash9.ocx. So everytime your screensaver tries to load due to idle status it cannot find the file flash.ocx because there is no file with that filename.

Please follow the solution below to stop the annoying “could not find flash.ocx” error

1. Go to My Computer  –> Drive C –> Windows Folder –> System32 folder –> Macromed folder –> flash folder

2. Create a copy of the file flash9f.ocx or flash9.ocx in to the same folder.

3. Rename the file with flash.ocx

4. Test your screensaver.

5. Finish

Now you can use your computer free from the annoying “could not find flash.ocx” error message

Whole Page Website Screenshot

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

Ever wonder how will you take a screenshot of a webpage that will take the whole page? Most of us takes screenshots by using the print screen key on our keyboard, but the problem with this, it will only take what is visible in our screen. So our primary solution here is to take a screen shot of the upper portion of the page and then the middle part and so on and edit it in our favorite image editing tools. This is a very tedious process and might not work well for all users.

Here are 2 softwares that I am using to attain this kind of screen shots. This are free tools and will be a really good help for you.

Pearl Crescent Firefox Plugin

Pearl Crescent Page Saver is an extension for Mozilla Firefox that lets you capture images of web pages.  These images can be saved in PNG or JPEG format.  Using Page Saver, you can capture an entire page or just the visible portion.  Options let you control whether images are captured at full size (which is the default) or scaled down to a smaller size.

Smartbro Plan 799 plug it anywhere broadband.

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

Smart Telecommunication Philippines now offered a new exciting plan from their Smart Bro Wireless Broadband Internet. The good thing about this new plan is that it is really portable unlike the existing Smartbro connections wherein they will be installing a receiver antenna on your house, this plan will be using a Smartbro USB modem which you can plug to any computer’s USB port.

The plan is 799 which means you will be paying a 799 pesos monthly fee and an installation fee 1,999 pesos. The monthly fee include a 40 hours free internet access and in the event of exceeding the free 40 hours the subscribers will be charged 10 pesos per 30 minutes block.

I believe this is a really good choice for those who have laptops and travels a lot because they can easily gain an internet access anywhere they are. But for the people who are like me who spends their whole lives at home in front of their PC, I don’t think you should subscribe to this plan 799 and suggest go to the plan 999. (this is if you have good Smart Bro connection if not try the other ISPs.)

Yahoo Messenger for Vista now available for download

Thursday, December 6th, 2007

image After my long wait for the release of yahoo messenger for Windows Vista, the day has finally came. A couple of minutes ago, I received an email from Yahoo telling me that the new Yahoo Messenger for Windows Vista is now available for download.

As you can see from the screen shots I provided it is really different from the other versions of Yahoo messenger. It also make use of the Windows Vista Sidebar for adding quick contacts.image

This is one really cool application that any windows Vista user should have. I just wish that this version is also as stable or if possible more stable than the previous version of Yahoo Messenger. Another thing, you can install Yahoo Messenger for Vista without uninstalling your previous Yahoo Messenger. Which means you can have 2 accounts open at the same time. I don’t know if it’s a bug or something but I like it this way. Although it doesn’t support much of the original features because this is only a preview and only capable of chatting and sending attachments, I still love this version and will be waiting for the full release of this software

Download Yahoo Messenger for Vista now and enjoy chatting with your friends and families.

5 things I like in Windows Vista over Windows XP

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

I have been using Windows Vista for quite sometimes and there are a lot of new features in it which I really like.

1. ReadyBoost Technology

ReadyBoost is a technology built into Windows Vista that uses USB memory keys, flash memory cards and other flash devices. Your USB/Flash Device can be used to be your temporary RAM.

2. BitLocker Drive Encryption with a USB Device

Bitlocker is full disk encryption feature designed to protect data by providing encryption for entire volumes. Your USB device will work as your personal key before you can boot your Windows Vista Operating System

3. Windows Sidebar

Is a new panel which can be located in either right or left of your desktop. In this panel you can put in desktop gadgets which are small applets designed for specialized purpose.

4. Hold ‘Em Poker

This is a new game which is not included in the default installation. It is a very good poker poker game and I find it really enjoying. You can download this game through Windows Update under Windows Extras along with Bitlocker Drive Encryption.

5. Windows Dreamscene

I really like the idea of having animating background, and with Windows Dreamscene you can possibly put a video as your desktop background. This is more on under my wants rather than my needs. I just find it so amusing and relaxing to see your desktop background moving although sometimes it makes me feel a little dizzy. lol. I really don’t recommend this if your windows system only meets the minimum requirement of Windows Vista Ultimate Edition which 1 gb of RAM. You should have more than this so you won’t experience slowing of your machine.

PS. I currently use 3 computers(1 Windows Vista Ultimate, 1 Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon and 1 Windows XP) that’s why I can easily see the difference between these 3 operating systems. poker game

That’s it your Skype now does not conflict with your apache web server installation.

Yahoo Messenger 9.0.0.797 Beta

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

ymI just found out the new version of Yahoo Messenger which is still in its beta state. I am an avid fan of Yahoo Messenger and I am really happy with its functionality. So far, all I can notice is its new design and more professional way of arranging the messages in a chat conversation. It somewhat looks like the Yahoo version of Windows Live Messenger. I hope Yahoo will still add more features in this version of Yahoo Messenger. To sum up I still love it a lot.

Digitizing Books One Word at a Time

captcha

I believe we have seen this image a lot of time on the web. But what does this script really do is what I am going to discuss. This is a Captcha(Completely Automated Turing Test To Tell Computers and Humans Apart). We all know that this script works as human verification tools for most websites and this helps to identify spam or automated registration, etc. This is really a great tool, you can even listen to the words if you can’t read it well and the best part of this script is it comes for free.

But what we don’t know is that when we type the words displayed from the Captcha image in the text box we already helped digitizing old text. This is no ordinary tool, it is double purpose program and still a very useful one.

According to reCaptcha.net website:

“About 60 million CAPTCHAs are solved by humans around the world every day. In each case, roughly ten seconds of human time are being spent. Individually, that’s not a lot of time, but in aggregate these little puzzles consume more than 150,000 hours of work each day. What if we could make positive use of this human effort? reCAPTCHA does exactly that by channeling the effort spent solving CAPTCHAs online into “reading” books. “

Captchas have several applications for security which are as follows:

Preventing Comment Spam in Blogs.

Protecting Website Registration.

Online Polls.

Preventing Dictionary Attacks.

Search Engine Bots.

Worms and Spam.

So what are you waiting for, include captchas in your websites and be free from spam and help digitize books.

How to create a video tutorial?

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

Ever wonder how Lynda.com’s tutorials are made? How can we record our desktop activity and later play it back? How can they record the video activity and has a voice over of the instructions?

These are just some questions that I encounter when i first saw a video tutorial from Lynda.com. At first, I really thought that they just edit the video and include a voice over. I even planned myself doing some video tutorials but I just don’t know the tools and software I will be needing.

I have searched for a freeware for this kind of software but I failed and still cannot find a freeware of this so I decided to just get a registered version of My Screen recorder Pro.

My Screen Recorder Pro is a screen recording software that allows you to record desktop screen activity. You can demonstrate hot wo use a website, explain a product concept, create step by step video tutorials, etc.

I have been using this for months for explaining product concepts and soon I will create a video tutorial and I will be posting it here.

You can check their site at this address to learn more about this software.
